A really unique treasure with documented provenance. This ring was discovered in 1993 in Llandovery, Carmarthenshire. It was presented to UK crown as was determined not to be treasure trove (photocopy of letter from Coroner is enclosed).
A comprehensive report by J. David Zienkiewicz (renowned scholar and author) was produced in 1994 for the Dyfed Museum. A photocopy of this report plus a transcribed version, printed on parchment type paper is included.
The report is very detailed and it is unusual to have so much information presented with an ancient ring. In the opinion of J. David Zienkiewicz the chalcedony intaglio is from 1st century A.D and depicts an elderly goatherd. The shank is probably later - 4th century.
Please read the report for a comprehensive account.
The ring currently fits size I (UK) or 4.25 (US); we do not recommend re-sizing.
