A sensational French 19th Century Sardonyx Cameo Pendant and Brooch with a portrait of a lady, possibly Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais. It is set with pearls (not tested but assumed to be natural) and rose cut diamonds.

It features exceptionally fine craftsmanship. The bail and pin can be removed to wear alternately as a brooch or pendant.

Cameos have transcended epochs, captivating hearts from ancient Rome to modernity. In the classical era, cameos adorned the elite, depicting mythological tales and noble profiles carved into precious stones like sardonyx and agate.

Their allure persisted through the Renaissance, where artisans sculpted intricate narratives onto shells and gemstones. In the 19th century, Queen Victoria popularized them, sparking a resurgence of interest in these miniature masterpieces.

Today, cameos continue to enchant, evolving into a symbol of nostalgia and sophistication. From jewellery to cinema, their cameo appearances endure, weaving tales of history, artistry, and timeless elegance across civilisations.
