A superb example of a handmade, French 19th Century Cross Pendant set with very high quality Old Mine Cut Diamonds.

The diamonds are graded as G/H (very high colour for old mine) and VS2/SI1 clarity. Each diamond weighs approximately 0.68ct and is set in a handmade setting, which tests as 18k gold. The Pendant is complete with an original 18 inch, 18k gold chain.

Old Mine is the name given to Brazilian diamonds which were discovered in alluvial (river) deposits in 1725. They were only given the name Old Mine once newer deposit in South Africa were discovered in 1867.

Old Mine Cut Diamonds were cut according to the knowledge and tools available at the time of manufacture. They were cut with high crowns because the only way to fashion a rough stone was to grind it from the top with diamond powder. In order not to waste precious material most of the original rough was retained. These high crowns interacted beautifully with candle light, providing all the fire that drives people to seek out Old Mine Cut stones.

Diamonds such as these will never be manufactured again. They are a limited resource and as such are a valuable commodity, as well as being very beautiful!

The Pendant measures 46mm x 25mm and weighs 12.5 grams.

Supplied in immaculate condition, complete with presentation case and Diamond Certificate.
